I tried setting up the email feature with gmail and could not get the mail server test to work at all. It works fine with my comcast account, and I know pop access works on my gmail account so the only thing I can think of is that gmail wants the requests to come in on port 995, and Tasks may be using a typical default like 110, but there is no port option on the settings screen.

You could try adding the port # to the host name:
example.com:995
I honestly don't know if that will work or not.

Thanks, and I actually did try that one but to no avail as well. Logically you would think that would do it, but it just fails immediately using that syntax. Very odd....

I'm getting an error as well, but through a domain that I own. The account is accessible by all other means, and doesn't require a non-standard port. What else should I be checking?

I'm afraid there is little help I can offer based on that information... if you want to send me your account information, I can test it out.

I used the settings you sent me and could not connect to that account using *any* e-mail program.

I checked and see why this wouldn't work. If it has to be on that port, I'll have to code some special handling for Google Mail accounts.

Thanks, I'm not sure why they insist on a certain port, but it is worth it to support Gmail.
Cheers, Greg

joesparano - per your follow-up e-mail I'm afraid I don't know what to tell you. When I try to connect using the information you've given me, your host rejects the login. Perhaps it doesn't like PHP's e-mail login requests...
There is no useful error returned by PHP on login failure - it just returns "false". Perhaps your e-mail host can shed some light on this.

Thanks for looking into it - I appreciate your time. I'll see what my host has to say.

hello! I'm having the same trouble with the GMail login as well. Our company has standardized on GMail as our corporate email host using Google Apps, and we've also standardized now on UseTasks for task management. Hopefully they can be made compatible?
Secure POP3 (SSL-POP) should actually be going over port 995, just as Google is doing. Does UseTasks use this port ?
Alex, can I email you the login information to diagnose?

I recommend signing up for a free account at FastMail.fm - they work great for Tasks Pro mailboxes.

Thanks for the suggestion, Alex. It's not a perfect solution, since I'll have to forward our corporate support inboxes from gmail (where our domain is pointing) to Fastmail, which would mean double the administration effort and maintenance, and also double the possible points of failure. And we're planning on having numerous mailboxes setup.
I'm planning on purchasing the self-install unlimited version soon, since I'm finding ever-increasing uses for UseTasks within our organization. Am I able to dig into the code with this version to find a workaround?

You wouldn't want Tasks Pro checking your main support inbox because it deletes messages after retrieving them from the mailbox (this is noted in the documentation).
You could certainly change the code to support this if you wanted to, it's not a difficult thing to change.

Gmail archives the emails once they've been downloaded so we're not too worried about the emails being deleted. We have multiple support inboxes, and we'll be using TasksPro to maintain these support queues, and to delegate appropriately.
Needless to say, we're finding all kinds of uses for TasksPro, and I'm giddy with the possibility of simplifying support and project management into a single killer app. Once figure out this Gmail workaround, we'll be good to go.
On a productivity note, Gmail has saved me countless hours that I used to spend on categorizing and organizing my email with Outlook and Thunderbird (and I even used custom processing rules & tools). I no longer organize, I simply search. The combo of Gmail and TasksPro really is an amazing productivity tool.
